Hiding servo leads and covering material
Jun 24th, 2009, 11:58pm

Ok I recently survived  A plane crash not a model
as part of my rehab I was asked to build a model airplane
aerodromes Fokker DVII 36"   I am 80% complete
I have questions about hiding the servo leads from the wing to the fuse
Do I slide it down the cabane ? and lash it down
What covering did Bert Ayers use before it was painted ?
hopefully when I am finished I will be flying again the models and the real ones

Hello drfaux,
Welcome to the forum. We have a wonderful group here.
A plane crash, how horrible! You are very lucky.

Yes, you do run the servo leads down a cabane or two if you don't use a "Y" connector and into the fuselage. Cover the leads with paper or covering material to hide them.  Bert used Polyspan. We sell it and there is lots of info here on the forum as to how it is used. Do an advanced search to get more details.

Best wishes to get your model flying and to fly the real aircraft as well.

Kay

drfaux: Welcome to the forum. I solder extentions on the servo lead, leaving enough wire to be able to take the servo out with its servo panel. I push the excess wire into the next inboard rib section. The rest of the wire goes to the wing center section where I solder the three (3 wire) extentions together. The third one goes down to the receiver thru a hole just beside the cabane strut mounting hole (I add a piece of scrap 1/8" balsa, usually by the back strut) with a small hole for the wire. I solder an extra servo connector onto that lead. Of course a corresponding hole (shaped to except the servo connector)  needs to be made in the fuselage after the wing is glue to the cabane struts.
My method is to cover the bottom of the wing first, then run the wiring, test the servos with the receiver/transmitter, then cover the top of the wing. When I run the wire down the cabane strut, I cover it with masking tape and paint the tape to match the other cabane struts. I also use a small section of tape to cover the hole in the fuselage around the extention wire.
I strongly recommend Polyspan. Most of us in this forum have used many different covering materials, I would guess most will say Polyspan is the best covering material they have used. -----Bert
