Thats exactly what I did on F7 - see you didn't need any pictures! I think my control horn was shorter so I don't get as much rudder movement as I like. I haven't tried a knife edge - but rudder is fine for most stuff. Stall turns are exceptable, but have never entered one going straight up as we do with sport models. Can't get most of these WWWI's to go straight up.
Looks like your doing another terrific build - the Bristol is fantastic.

thanks bert! question, did you use foam in the tail end or stringers? just cut a couple of cardboard templates to position f7 and i think its going to work.

No foam. Seems to be sheet balsa, can't remember how it was done.

f7 glued in place using cardboard templates to position it. next is the 1/8 inch dowel and deciding how to shape the fuselage tail. i am thinking foam fore and aft of the rudder control horn. it will help secure the guide tubes for the control lines.

kay do you think it would be a bad idea to reposition one or two of the ribs in the rudder to a more scale position? just a thought.

What I would suggest about the rudder for scale features is to use 1/8"x1/16" sticks and mimic the original in all three locations. That is the way I would design it today anyway. The DIII kit is a rather old design and I wasn't as interested in scale accuracy back in 2002. Gosh has it been that long ago?  Almost eight years...

oh yes! already got my feet wet, might as well get soaked. working on the foam fill in the tail today, its looking good. next is figuring out the elevator and rudder control line runs. its going to be tight back there and the upper lines to the elevator could interfere with the rudder. scale exit points are pretty far aft. pictures soon.

almost done shaping the tail section of the fuselage. the foam adds a surprising amount of rigidity with very little weight. i think it will also be a good foundation for the control line guide tubes.

Maybe I missed something.  What is the foam supposed to do?

The foam is a lightweight way of finishing the tail section instead of balsa or continuing the stringers back to the end of the fuselage. It gives a nice solid look to the tail with minimal weight. Initially, when the model was designed, the intent was to make a model that was easy to build and stand off scale. As such, it was felt that most builders would not sheet the back of the fuselage but as it happens, most do. The gentle curve on the top of the fuselage in this area is best made by simply sanding foam to shape. Some used soft balsa which works but one has to be careful not to add too much weight back there.

The DIII is coming along nicely!
I have a stupid question.
I know a lot of builders use blue and pink foam. But, what kind of foam is it and where do you buy it? I live far from the big city and my favorite Hobby Store closed up (new owners mismanaged).

It is home insulating foam available at home improvement stores like Home Depot.

Looking good, Steve! The internal control will add quite a lot to the scale look. The change of structure in the rudder is worth it, I believe, especially if it's going to be white.

Forming ply or balsa over the D III tail cone shouldn't be too difficult, as Kay mentioned, but I think off & on abut whether or not I should have used foam on my D V. *shrugs* We shall see...
